Hollywood's Diversity Smokescreen

Image
Diversity has always been an issue in the media. There are too many ethnicities and cultures that go tragically under represented or even misrepresented in Hollywood. It has been a heated topic for many years and it seems as if Hollywood just can not get it right. There have been times when ethnicities have been overlooked and actors were incorrectly cast. An example that comes to mind is when I think of this is when Scarlett Johansson was cast as the lead in the film Ghost in the Shell , in which the lead is intended to be women of Asian ethnicity.  Many believe that Hollywood uses a figurative smokescreen when it comes to diversity. This is because while there are general claims that they are being inclusive, it simply doesn't show. A study on films from 2018 shows that there has been an increase in diversity, although not much. The study looked at films from a ten year span, starting in 2007. Out of 1,200 top films in that span of time, only 27 of them included underrepres

LGBTQ+ Representation: At What Cost?

Image
What Is GLAAD? GLAAD is an organization that has dedicated their efforts in fighting against the underrepresentation of the LGBTQ+ community in media. GLAAD was founded in 1985 and has been operating ever since, acting in the forefront of peaceful protests and organizing petitions. Not only do they advocate for the LGBTQ+ community but have also shown efforts in increasing racial diversity.  Unbalanced Scales According to the GLAAD website, the year 2020 was bittersweet for the communities under the support of the organization. There were 8 major studio films that were tracked andand each studio was graded based on their representation. All 8 studios were deemed "insufficient" in their representation.  While there was a rise in LGBTQ+ representation, the racial diversity of the LGBTQ+ characters was nearly non-existent. More than half of the present queer characters received less than three minutes of screen time. Transgender roles were also unseen and have been for three y

Digital Media: The Age of Social Media

Image
The advancement of digital media has brought about many new ways to communicate and spread information. The question is: is this information reliable? Another question that arises where social media is concerned is if it is ethical. In simple terms, ethics is often defined as the "right thing to do". It is a concept in which morals weigh heavily when determining if something is ethical or not.           With social media comes an all to efficient way to spread information. In the world of digital media, everyone feels as if they are a journalist. Often times, people will share their own perspective on a situation as if it is hard fact. This leads to the spread of misinformation or biased outlooks on situations. Not only should people be concerned about the ethical validity of spreading misinformation, even if by accident, they should also be conscious of what they share in regard to other people. It is easy to post a photo with a friend and tag the location on any

The Scoop on TMZ

Image
Why TMZ is Unethical TMZ is a tabloid news outlet that focuses mostly on celebrities. The program is infamous for being the first to report on an event, which has gotten them in trouble on more than one occasion. The writers at TMZ get their information from anonymous or known tips. These tips may be true or false and TMZ does little research before surfacing a story on the subject.  Most recently, their biggest judgement has come in regards to their coverage of the death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter. TMZ received an anonymous tip about the helicopter crash involving Bryant and his daughter. The writers devoted only an hour of research before posting the story. They were the first news outlet to provide information on the crash and those involved.  Due to the speed of their coverage, TMZ suffered an incredible amount of criticism, considering they had announced it before the coroner had even verified the identities of those who died in the crash. Is The Common Good Really Good?

Image
How is 'The Common Good' defined?     John Rawls defines the concept as when conditions are equal and to everyone's advantage. Meaning that everyone has the same opportunities in life, no matter their background or status in life. This can be applied to many things, including social systems, institutions, and the environments on which people depend working in a way that is beneficial to everyone.   Common Good or Common Bad?     There are a lot of pros and cons to the concept of 'The Common Good'. When applied, the purpose is to make the world some kind of utopian place where competition essentially does not exist. The goal is for everyone to have equal opportunity to reach their goal. However, without competition the world would like become the opposite of a utopia. Competition is healthy and without it, there would be no motivations to improve. For example, someone who schooled for years for a degree would have the same opportunity for a job as someone who
